Prayers

Sometimes, for no apparent reason, you reject prayers.

At dinner tonight, you refused to participate in the blessing.

Our dinner prayer is sung:

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

You yelled through the prayer. Usually you laugh happily at the end. For the past few weeks, you’ve gotten better at trying to sing along with us.

Tonight, just yelling.

The other night, I tried to pray over you as you lay in bed. With my hand on your head, I usually pray,

              “The Lord bless you and keep you;
                  the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you;
                  the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.”

This is how it usually goes. But not the other night. You didn’t want to go to sleep and you knew the prayer was on the road to sleepy time.

As I tried to touch your head and begin, you would have none of it. You said, “No bless and keep! No bless and keep!” while you swatted my hand away.

Whether you know it or not, whether you like it or not, Mommy and Daddy pray for you every day.

Although I have to say, “No bless and keep!” was pretty funny.

As we gathered to offer blessings to some who were leaving for the summer, members of the congregation placed their hands on each others shoulders. When you placed your hand on his shoulder, did you offer your prayer, as well?
